Sleep Study (Polysomnography)

What is a Sleep Study?

A polysomnography, or sleep study, is a comprehensive overnight test that records a range of body functions while your child sleeps, including breathing patterns, oxygen levels, heart rate, brain activity and body movement. It is considered the gold-standard test for diagnosing paediatric sleep disorders, particularly obstructive sleep apnoea, and provides Dr Kok with detailed information to guide treatment.

Why a sleep study may be recommended

  • Loud or frequent snoring, or witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep

  • Restless sleep, frequent waking, or unusual movements overnight

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness or difficulty waking

  • Behavioural or learning difficulties that may be linked to poor sleep quality

  • Follow-up after treatment, to confirm improvement

What to expect on the night

Your child will stay overnight in a dedicated sleep laboratory, in a comfortable, home-like room. A sleep technologist will attach small, painless sensors to your child's scalp, face, chest and limbs to record data throughout the night - these are designed to be as unobtrusive as possible.

A parent or carer is required to spend the night in the room with their children. While it can take a little time to settle in an unfamiliar environment, most children are able to sleep well enough for a good quality recording.

After the study

The overnight recording is carefully analysed and reviewed by Dr Kok, who will discuss the results with you at a follow-up appointment, explaining the findings in plain language and outlining any recommended next steps or treatment.

Next steps

If your child has been referred for a sleep study, or you have concerns about their sleep that may warrant one, contact Little Lungs to discuss booking, or speak with your GP about a referral.
