Sleep Study (Polysomnography)
What is a Sleep Study?
A polysomnography, or sleep study, is a comprehensive overnight test that records a range of body functions while your child sleeps, including breathing patterns, oxygen levels, heart rate, brain activity and body movement. It is considered the gold-standard test for diagnosing paediatric sleep disorders, particularly obstructive sleep apnoea, and provides Dr Kok with detailed information to guide treatment.
Why a sleep study may be recommended
Loud or frequent snoring, or witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep
Restless sleep, frequent waking, or unusual movements overnight
Excessive daytime sleepiness or difficulty waking
Behavioural or learning difficulties that may be linked to poor sleep quality
Follow-up after treatment, to confirm improvement
What to expect on the night
Your child will stay overnight in a dedicated sleep laboratory, in a comfortable, home-like room. A sleep technologist will attach small, painless sensors to your child's scalp, face, chest and limbs to record data throughout the night - these are designed to be as unobtrusive as possible.
A parent or carer is required to spend the night in the room with their children. While it can take a little time to settle in an unfamiliar environment, most children are able to sleep well enough for a good quality recording.
After the study
The overnight recording is carefully analysed and reviewed by Dr Kok, who will discuss the results with you at a follow-up appointment, explaining the findings in plain language and outlining any recommended next steps or treatment.
