Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition that affects the lungs, digestive system and other organs, requiring lifelong, coordinated care. Dr Harvey Kok provides expert ongoing care and monitoring for children and adolescents living with cystic fibrosis, working in close collaboration with multidisciplinary CF teams. His clinical interest in this area is reflected in his current Master's research in cystic fibrosis through the University of Newcastle.
Understanding cystic fibrosis
CF is caused by a faulty gene that affects the movement of salt and water in and out of cells, leading to thick, sticky mucus that can affect the lungs, digestive system and other organs. It is usually identified through newborn screening, though it can occasionally be diagnosed later in childhood.
Ongoing care and monitoring
Because CF affects multiple body systems, ongoing care is comprehensive and typically involves:
Regular monitoring of lung function and respiratory health
Airway clearance techniques and physiotherapy input
Management of nutrition and digestive health, alongside dietetic support
Monitoring and prompt treatment of respiratory infections
Coordination with the broader multidisciplinary CF team, including physiotherapists, dietitians, social workers and other specialists
Family education and support to manage day-to-day care confidently
A collaborative, whole-family approach
Living with CF affects the whole family, and care is planned with this in mind. Dr Kok works closely with your child's broader care team, and takes time to explain test results and treatment plans clearly, so families feel informed and supported at every stage.
