Overnight Oximetry
Overnight oximetry is a simpler screening test that measures your child's blood oxygen levels and heart rate throughout the night, using a small, painless sensor worn on the finger or toe. It is often used as an initial or follow-up test for sleep-related breathing concerns, and can typically be carried out in the comfort of your own home.
When overnight oximetry may be used
As an initial screening test where sleep apnoea is suspected but symptoms are mild
To monitor a child's oxygen levels overnight for other respiratory or medical reasons
As a follow-up test after treatment, to check for improvement
When a full overnight sleep study is not immediately required or accessible
What to expect
The test is straightforward: a small sensor is placed on your child's finger or toe before bed and worn overnight while the device records oxygen levels and heart rate. Most children tolerate the sensor well and are able to sleep normally. The device is then returned so the recording can be downloaded and reviewed.
Understanding the results
Dr Kok will review the results and explain what they mean for your child. Because oximetry does not capture sleep stages, breathing effort, or airflow in the same way a full sleep study does, results that are unclear or that don't fully explain your child's symptoms may lead to a recommendation for a more detailed polysomnography (sleep study) to complete the picture.
Next steps
If Dr Kok has recommended overnight oximetry for your child, our team will provide the equipment and clear instructions for use at home. Contact Little Lungs with any questions about the process.
