Most children experience respiratory infections from time to time, and the majority resolve without complication. However, some children experience infections that are unusually frequent, severe, slow to resolve, or associated with complications. Dr Harvey Kok provides specialist assessment and management for children with recurrent or complex respiratory infections, including bronchitis, pneumonia, and related airway complications.
When infections warrant a specialist review
Frequent chest infections that interfere with school or daily life
Pneumonia that is severe, recurrent, or slow to fully resolve
Infections associated with ongoing cough, wheeze or breathlessness
A history of hospital admission for a respiratory infection
Underlying conditions that may increase susceptibility to infection
Parental or GP concern about a child's pattern of respiratory illness
Assessment & Management
Assessment includes a detailed history of past and current infections, examination, and where indicated, investigations such as chest imaging, lung function testing, or blood tests to look for underlying contributing factors. This helps determine whether recurrent infections reflect normal childhood illness patterns, an underlying respiratory condition, or another contributing factor requiring specific management.
Management is guided by the underlying cause identified, and may include:
Treatment of the current infection and monitoring of recovery
Investigation for underlying conditions, where recurrent infections suggest this may be relevant
Strategies to reduce the frequency and severity of future infections
Coordination with your GP and, where needed, other specialists
Guidance for families on when to seek urgent care for future infections
