Chronic Cough

A cough that lingers for weeks can be frustrating and worrying for families, particularly when it disrupts sleep, school, or daily activities. Dr Harvey Kok provides thorough investigation and management of persistent cough in children, with a focus on identifying the underlying cause rather than simply treating the symptom.

What counts as a chronic cough

A cough lasting more than four weeks is generally considered chronic in children and warrants further assessment. Chronic cough can have many possible causes, including ongoing airway inflammation, asthma, infection, reflux, or, less commonly, an inhaled foreign object or an underlying lung condition.

What we look for

  • The character of the cough — dry, wet, or associated with wheeze

  • Timing and triggers, such as nighttime, exercise, or exposure to specific environments

  • Associated symptoms, including breathlessness, feeding difficulty, or weight changes

  • Past medical history and any previous episodes of infection or choking

  • Family history of asthma, allergies or other respiratory conditions

Assessment & Management

Assessment includes a detailed history and examination, and may involve lung function testing, imaging, or other investigations depending on the pattern of symptoms. This thorough approach helps identify the specific underlying cause, so that treatment addresses the source of the cough rather than masking it.

Once the underlying cause is identified, management is tailored accordingly — whether that involves asthma treatment, addressing reflux, managing allergies, treating an infection, or further investigation where a less common cause is suspected. Dr Kok will explain his findings clearly and outline a plan for ongoing monitoring.
