What is a bronchoscopy?
Bronchoscopy: A bronchoscopy is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the airways and lungs using a thin, flexible instrument called a bronchoscope. It allows the specialist to identify abnormalities, determine the underlying cause of respiratory symptoms, and, when necessary, obtain tissue or fluid samples for further investigation. Bronchoscopy is typically performed under general anaesthesia and is undertaken only after careful clinical assessment, planning, and discussion of the procedure, its benefits, and potential risks.
Why a bronchoscopy may be recommended
To investigate persistent or unexplained respiratory symptoms
To assess suspected airway narrowing, malformation, or structural abnormality
To look for or remove a suspected inhaled foreign object
To collect airway samples (bronchoalveolar lavage) for infection or inflammation testing
To further investigate abnormal findings on chest imaging
To assess persistent or recurrent respiratory infections
What to expect
Bronchoscopy is usually performed as a day procedure in a hospital setting, with sedation or general anaesthetic to keep your child comfortable and still throughout. The bronchoscope is passed gently through the nose or mouth into the airway, allowing Dr Kok to examine the airway directly and take samples if needed. The procedure itself is generally brief, and your child will be closely monitored throughout by an anaesthetic team.
Recovery
Most children recover quickly and are able to go home the same day, once fully awake and observed for a short period. A mild sore throat, hoarse voice, or slight cough is common in the hours afterwards and usually settles quickly. Dr Kok will discuss any findings with you, and results from samples taken during the procedure are typically available in the days following.
